Richard Marcus currently serves as conductor of the Youth Orchestra of the Lowcountry and the College of Charleston Wind Ensemble. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Iowa and a Master of Music Degree in Conducting from Butler University (Indianapolis). He is also a graduate of the University of Calgary’s Wind Conducting Diploma Program.
Mr. Marcus has directed bands, orchestras, and choirs in elementary, middle, and high schools in Georgia, Illinois, and Switzerland. His ensembles have earned superior ratings in music festivals in Florida, Virginia, New York City, and the Bahamas. In 1997, he led the Elgin High School (Illinois) Orchestra on an extensive summer tour of Europe.
Mr. Marcus has served as Music Director or Guest Conductor for several professional and community orchestras including the Methodist Chamber Orchestra, the Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra, the Valley Civic Orchestra, and the Athenaeum Pops Orchestra.
The College of Charleston Wind Ensemble was established in the fall of 2006 with Mr. Marcus as its conductor. Members of the group were invited to perform during the inauguration of Governor Mark Sanford in January 2007.
