The Charleston Symphony Orchestra is funded in part by a grant from the Southern Arts Federation in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts and the South Carolina Arts Commission.

SOCIETY OF 1936

In 1936, during the depth of the depression, a very determined group of classical music lovers established the Charleston Symphony Orchestra. To celebrate those who saw the need for live, professional orchestra music seventy years ago, we established the Society of 1936 to help keep the music going for another seventy years. This special society immediately attracted ten Lowcountry couples, and each of them pledged $70,000 over three years to financially assist orchestra operations.

The members of the Society of 1936 are:
Jim and Claire Allen
John and Mary Lou Barter
Van and Susan Campbell
Stuart and Sheila Christie
Ralph & Linda Davis, Jr.
Leo and Carol Fishman
Paul and Mela Haklisch
Ted and Joan Halkyard
Ted and Tricia Legasey
Carolyn McAfee, Thomas and Julie McAfee III
Burt and Marion Schools

We have attracted long-time patrons and brand new supporters to the Society, and would be delighted to have you join this very special group. If you have any questions regarding the group’s mission of long-time financial stability for the CSO, or would like to ask questions about becoming a member, please contact
